Bloody Rain

Bloody Rain
is now on sale and was launched with an incredible line up of musicians and special guests at the Union Chapel on Thursday 18th September 2014. 23 musicians on stage at one point! Great review in the Arts Desk by Peter Quinn. On 19th September, The Convent Club gig was filmed and streamed worldwide. Check out the News section to see one of the songs from that performance and to see how you can still download the concert.

Dedicated to the people of Africa, and the music of that continent that has inspired so many artists for so long, Bloody Rain brings together a stunningly diverse group of performers.

Among a raft of guests on the album are the Zimbabwe-born singer Eska, Senegal's Seckou Keita on kora, UK-Caribbean saxophonist Courtney Pine, The Soweto Gospel choir and Adam Glasser from South Africa, the Nigerian singer Keziah Jones, American/ Israeli trumpeter Avishai Cohen, and the famous James Brown arranger and co-writer Pee Wee Ellis. My Bloody Rain band are Tony Remy (with whom I have written most of the songs), the wonderful Dominic Miller, Henry Thomas, Martyn Barker, Tim Cansfield and Adriano Adewale.

The Bloody Rain choir are my dear friend Ian Shaw, my son Otis Coulter, Janine Johnson, Lilybud Dearsley, GianLuca Di Martini, Roberto Angrisani and myself. Last but not least the strings were arranged by Enrico Melozzi in Rome.

We hope you enjoy the album and look forward to seeing you at one of the many European concerts promoting Bloody Rain and also please browse my fabulous new website and be sure to check out my live gigs section to see where else we are playing if you missed the Union Chapel.

Recorded in the UK, Johannesburg, Paris and Tel Aviv, Sarah Jane Morris’s latest album, Bloody Rain, is undoubtedly a labour of love. Hearing it performed live last night in the Union Chapel, in front of an adoring audience, confirmed that it is also her masterpiece.

Morris couched the – at times painful – subject matter in the most mellifluous, seductive melodies imaginable.Peter Quinn, The Arts Desk

31st Jan Ebola Concert

An evening of live performances and music is being held later this month to help protect thousands of children across the world from preventable diseases.

Article taken from The Hastings Observer - Click to view original article >

The Clean Water, Safe Children benefit gig on Saturday, January 31 aims to raise funds for the Ebola Disaster Emergency Committee, Malaria No More and Water Aid.

A host of local artists will include singer Sarah Jane Morris who lived in Hastings for many years.

Her latest album "Bloody Rain" was released last September to rapturous review from mainstream and music press.

Also performing are the Ingrid Pitt Orchestra, Hastings Guerrilla Circus, Cheap Thrills Bonkers Bingo, Vocal Explosion, Swing Street, Michael Drinkwater (magician), DJ Solomon and more.

Jeremy Birch, leader of Hastings Borough Council, will be opening the event. He said: "What better way to raise money for such important causes and lift post-Christmas spirits than doing one of the things this town does best - throwing a great party and playing fantastic music."

Mandy Curtis, of 18 Hours events, said: "With recent news focusing on the devastating impact of Ebola, it's easy to forget that poor water and sanitation kills 500,000 children every year and malaria claims a child's life every minute. The tragedy is that so many of these deaths are preventable. Thanks to everyone who is making this gig happen, giving up their time and resources for free. It’s going to be a great night for a great cause."

The gig, at the Masonic Hall, East Ascent, St Leonards, is from 7.30pm to 12.30am.
Tickets are £12.50 in advance and £15 on the door and are available at SHOP in Norman Road, the Tourist Information Centre at Aquila House, and at www.cleanwatergig.eventbrite.co.uk.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

I ended 2014 doing a week of master classes with my friend the talented singer Ian Shaw (see Master class Photo) ending the week with a concert, which featured the 20 students that took part. These master classes took place in Cento, in Italy, which had been damaged by the earthquakes in 2011 . The project was about bringing the community back together again. Ian and I had a very enjoyable time and would love to repeat the experience in other towns and cities around the world. Let us know if you have some ideas about this.

We’ve hit 2015 running! We performed at The Southern Pavilion in Worthing in a hurricane this January. Apologies to those members of the audience who were stopped from coming onto the Pier, due to the gales. We're delighted to announce that we will be coming back to play there on 25th September when hopefully the winds won't be as strong!

What an interesting audience we had at Band on the Wall in Manchester. There were many journalists and radio presenters, some of our musician friends, including Andy Connell from 'Swing Out Sister' and my mothers' cousin and wife who were the trendiest 80 plusses that I know.

The next morning, Tony, Tim and I went in to the BBC to perform on Woman's Hour. I had a lovely catch up and interview with the ever wonderful Jenni Murray (see photo) and the interview and song will be featured on Woman's Hour this Friday. Tune in at 10am to Radio 4. We then travelled to Liverpool to perform live on BBC Merseyside with the fascinating Spencer Leigh who gives very good interview. We performed at the Zanzibar Club in the evening. Thank you to my fans who came out on a cold evening, especially those who go back as far as my performing in 'Blues in the Night' at The Everyman Theatre in 1994.

This weekend (22nd, 23rd & 24th January) I'll be at Ronnie Scott's in London with my full band. I've heard through the grapevine it's sold out except for late show on Friday. Get your tickets now! If you miss out, I'm performing at very special concert at St John’s Church, Farncombe, on 30th January. You can get all ticket information in the Concert section.

On 31st January, Tony and I will be performing at a special fundraising concert for Ebola at St Leonard's on Sea at The Masonic Hall and we will be doing several concerts in Italy in February and March.

I'm excited about my double A side single coming out next month - Men Just Wanna Have Fun/I Shall Be Released. We're doing a limited edition red vinyl 7inch single which we will release on April 25th to coincide with National Record Store Day. You’ll have to be quick to get that one! What do you think about me releasing a "Best Of" album on vinyl in 2016? Please get back to me about that one.

Very soon we will have copies of 'Blue Valentine' to sell through the website so keep your eyes pealed. A lot of fans say it was one of my best albums and was released in 1995.

Time Running out for Pledge Campaign

Dear Friends and Fans,

The Pledge Music Campaign ends on the 5th May which is just over a week away. We still need your help to raise the last £2000 needed so please pledge to buy Bloody Rain through the Pledge link or buy a ticket for the Hippodrome concert on 14th June for the most amazing line up. We need your help. Every little bit helps and remember 10% of all money raised goes to Annie Lennox's charity for Aids in Africa called SING.

This album, "Bloody Rain", is going to be a double album as we have recorded so many powerful songs and want to include them all. Double albums cost more money! £12 for the CD only or £25 signed. When the album is released it will have to be more than that. Get a bargain while you can. This has been one of most enjoyable writing, recording and mixing periods of my life so far. I have loved every minute of it and treasure everyone's musical contributions. Martyn Barker, Tony Remy ( with whom I have written most of the songs), Dominic Miller, Henry Thomas, Adriano Adewale, Tim Tim Cansfield, Michael Rosen, Annie Whitehead,John Eacott, Mornington Lockett, Pee Wee Ellis, Gianluca De Martini, Seckou Keita, Avishai Cohen, Keziah Jones, Adam Glasser, Janine Johnson, Courtney Pine, Otis Jack Coulter, Lilybud Dearsley, Ian Shaw, Eska and Roberto. Pledge Music Campaign

www.pledgemusic.com/projects/sarahjanemorris

It’s the last few weeks of the Pledge music campaign and we have 15% more to raise to get to 150%, which will really help make a difference to this project.

Thank you so much for your support and please carry on spreading the news so we can get a few more supporters before the end of this campaign. 5th May is the cut off day.

There are still 100 tickets to pledge for at £20 each for the Pledgers only concert at The Hippodrome, Leicester Sq, London on Saturday 14th June. The line up is incredible and you will not be disappointed. My friend the wonderful Richard Strange will be interviewing me live onstage before the concert. So many treats in store.

So far we have recorded 14 tracks for Bloody Rain and I feel this is the best album in my career so far. I have written the songs with Tony Remy, Dominic Miller, Henry Thomas, Martyn Barker, Mark Pulsford ( my husband) and my long time collaborator Johny Brown. The songs will lift your spirits and some will make you weep.

There are songs about freedom, about fear, about corruption, about contraception, about friendship, about honour killings, about child soldiers, about the difficulty of coming out of the closet, about homophobia and very importantly about love. So many wonderful musicians have contributed to this album and we are able to pay them thanks to your pledging .

I have loved the process of recording this album and feel very privileged to have had this experience. So much love has gone into the making of Bloody Rain. We have recorded at both Yellow Fish studios near Lewes and where Martyn Barker and our wonderful engineer Ian Caple is based and Smokehouse studios near Tower Bridge owned by a friend of ours Paul Madden.

This week we finish the recording process with additions from Seckou Keita on Kora and brass from Pee Wee Ellis, Annie Whitehead, John Eacott and Mornington Lockett which we record this Thursday, in Rome Enrico Mellozzi is arranging strings for a song about Honour killings called ‘No Beyonce‘, for 8 violins, to be recorded at Teatro Valle and he will record a solo by the wonderful Michael Rosen on soprano. In South Africa we have the wonderful input of the Soweto Gospel Choir. From Israel we will have the wonderful flugel horn from Avishai Cohen. On backing vocals joining me were Jannie Johnson, Roberto Agrisani and Gian Luca de Martini, Lillibud Dearsley, Otis Coulter (my son) and my great friend Ian Shaw. On Wednesday we record the glorious ESKA singing a duet on the title track, Bloody Rain.

This is a film (click on the image above) of Adriano Adewale, Martyn Barker, Henry Thomas, Tony Remy and myself recording a track called Coal Train. It was filmed by my brother Rod Morris, a film maker and is us ‘Live at The Smokehouse’. I am marking the places where The Soweto Gospel Choir will sing. You can now picture us recording this album ‘Live’. Please spread the word and please pledge to come to The Hippodrome as it makes sense to pack it out and make this a wonderful experience for all.

Thank you from us all.

Sarah Jane Morris and Prince!

This Monday I was performing with Tony Remy as part of his Blues Explosion band at Ronnie Scotts. Later that evening the club was turned inside out to make way for two impromptu concerts with Prince and his new band. I don’t think Ronnie Scotts had ever seen anything like it.

We were by definition Prince’s warm up band.
It was a great experience to see and hear him perform in such an intimate setting, although you needed to be as tall as Tony to actually see anything from where I was standing. Prince who is not the tallest of men, was sat down all evening playing the keyboards, so all I saw was his hat. I did get to say a cheeky hello to him as he entered the club though. I got to bed at 4.30 am and have been catching up ever since.

This is a photo taken of the board outside the club advertising the evening’s events. Its not often ones name is on the same board as Prince.

We would love to see you at The Hippodrome on the 14th June, so please make the most of the offer for 20 free tickets and if you aren’t one of the lucky ones, please pledge to come anyway as it will be an amazing concert with many special guests.

In a parallel project, I am collaborating with the extraordinary virtuoso guitarist Antonio Forcione. Our album is written, two songs already recorded, and one, Comfort Zone, will be available as a video, made with my brother Rod Morris who, as a photographer, has been responsible for the images used on many of my previous albums, and whose recent film The Beautiful Factory won an award at the Montpellier International Festival. Antonio and I continue to tour in the UK and Europe, developing our act and fine-tuning the rapport we have achieved together. Our plans include tours to the USA and Canada, and to Australia and Japan. The album should be ready for release by autumn 2014.

I continue to work with my dear friend Ian Shaw, many times winner of and universally acclaimed as Best Jazz Vocalist, doing concerts in the UK and Italy. We are next together at the Purcell Rooms on 10th December and again in Parma on 19th December. Ian is as funny as he is hugely talented, and working with him is a delight.

I will try and update the website regularly so you see how these projects are progressing.

Thank you for your continual support.

Yours in music

October 2012 News

Hello to you all, sorry its been so long since I’ve written a newsletter.

Its been a busy year starting with our usual 5 concerts at Ronnie Scotts in January with Dominic Miller, Tony Remy, Henry Thomas, Alastair Gavin, Martyn Barker, Annie Whitehead, John Eacott and Michael Rosen. We decided to call this the ‘Fallen Angel band’ so each time you see that listed you will know this is the line-up.

In February Tony Remy and I joined Noemi a singer songwriter in Italy at San Remo Song festival for a duet of a classic Italian song, with arrangement and conducting by Enrico Melozzi. Tony wore an amazing suit and shocked us all and along with his snake skin guitar, he stole the show! You can see this performance on youtube I gather.

Italy has provided many concerts for me this year with the Fallen Angel Band, Soup Songs ( The Robert Wyatt Band), duos with Tony Remy, quartet with Tony, Henry, Michael Rosen and Enrico Melozzi and duos with Ian Shaw and Antonio Forcione.

Cello Songs

November sees the UK launch of Cello Songs at London’s Purcell Rooms as part of the London Jazz festival on November 14th. On the 15th we play St Georges Hall in Bristol ( my first concert in this city for 26 years) and 17th Nov at Turner Simms in Southampton, the city of my birth! These concerts feature Tony Remy, Enrico Melozzi ( whose arrangements and co-production help make this a beautiful album), Michael Rosen, The Celestial Quartet and Jenny Adejayani. We are intending to have many guest artists with us at the Purcell Rooms in particular.

Alas we didn’t get the Arts Council Grant we had hoped to get, to make this an easier project to manage, but thanks to donations from many friends we can at least go ahead. We are on an incredibly tight budget so any help is gratefully received.

December sees Tony and I performing with Pino Daniele on Rai TV as a celebration of Neopolitan Song. There will be many European stars duetting with Italian singers. We have covered one of Pino Daniele’s songs on Cello Songs CD called Alleria and many years ago I co-wrote three songs with him, so we wanted to pay tribute to his songwriting.

December also has me doing a Christmas repertoire with Ian Shaw in Italy which should be very entertaining and a few more Cello Song concerts and working with the ‘Fallen Angel’ band in Modena, Venice and many other beautiful cities.

Book early for our annual stint at Ronnie Scotts on 3rd, 4th, 5th Jan 2013 with one concert on the first night and two on the Friday and Saturday. These concerts tend to sell out quickly. It is the Fallen Angel Band line-up with special guests. In January I also have a small part in a low budget movie called Hound by Chris Ward. I play a blind street singer!

My son Otis is now 17 and wants to be a singer songwriter which is very exciting! He intends to go to Music college next year. Many of you have heard him singing with me on a Bob Dylan classic this Summer and I’m sure there will be many more times in years ahead.

Have a great Autumn and Winter and I look forward to seeing you over the next months and years. Thank you so much for your continuing appreciation and support!

Where would we be without you all!!!!!
